Boulder Valley School District Wins Antron® Carpet Fiber Sustainable Flooring Performance Award For Nederland Elementary

Tandus Flooring Carpet Exceeds Expectations In A Harsh Winter Environment For 22 Years And Counting

Newport Coast, Calif. (April 22, 2012) — During a gala ceremony at California's The Resort at Pelican Hill®, INVISTA, maker of Antron® carpet fiber announced Nederland Elementary in Nederland, Colo. as the grand prize winner of the Antron® Carpet Fiber Sustainable Flooring Performance Award. The award recognizes the use of performance-driven carpet choices in commercial applications. In addition to other benefits, these choices demonstrate the First Life™ message that longer product life can play a significant role in reducing the environmental impact associated with premature consumption of resources required to replace carpet.

The panel of jurors selected Nederland Elementary for the stamina of its 22-year old carpet. The school, built and opened in 1990, was designed for more than 650 students ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade. The school's carpet, Guardian, by Tandus Flooring and constructed of Antron® nylon, continues to exceed expectations and fulfill its design and performance objectives, despite constant wear from school children and the harsh winter conditions, including snow, salt and mud, in the Rocky Mountain region.

According to judge Eileen Goodman, partner at Moody Nolan, Inc., "The original design intent at Nederland Elementary was to support a mountain community that relates to its environment. The overall design has remained timeless, and the carpet, despite its age and considering the weather conditions, has held up well and still looks great."

According to the Boulder Valley School District, they are building upon a more than 20 year commitment to environmental stewardship and embrace environmental sustainability at a new level. Its plan and supportive policy outline a vision and goals for further incorporating sustainability into curriculum and operations district-wide. The school district's personnel are proud that the materials used in the school are an example of this commitment.

The original Tandus Flooring carpet that was installed when the school opened is still performing. The floor coverings were originally selected to compliment the natural environment of abundantly beautiful rock formations and Ponderosa pine forests, in addition to complementing the exterior and interior finishes. The carpet's colorways were selected for their not-too-dark, neutral earth tones; ease in maintenance; and cost-efficiency over time.

"The carpet at Nederland Elementary shows how long properly specified and maintained carpet can exceed expectations, even for a facility impacted by snow, salt and mud because of the extreme winter climate," said Tracy Cook, director of global branding, INVISTA Commercial Flooring. "Recently, the custodial services team received bond funding, which afforded them the option of replacing the floor covering. The custodial staff declined the option to replace the carpet because it still looked excellent, and they expected several more years of performance from it."

Entries for the Antron® Carpet Fiber Sustainable Flooring Performance Award were evaluated on how well the original carpet selection continued to meet the client's performance and design objectives over time.

Judges for the Antron® Carpet Fiber Sustainable Flooring Performance Award were Sonya Dufner of Gensler, Eileen Goodman of Moody Nolan, Inc., Gillian Johnson of BURKETT DESIGN, Clay Pendergrast of HOK and Paulla Shetterly of CDH Partners.
