Yarn Construction
Yarn construction describes the way fibers are combined before being tufted into carpet. The way a yarn is constructed can affect the texture, color and overall carpet aesthetic as well as soil hiding and texture retention capabilities. The majority of commercial carpets are made with either a twisted yarn or an air-entangled yarn.
Twisted yarn: The most common form of twisted yarn is 2-ply. These yarns can be solid color or a barber pole (2 different colors). Plied yarns allow for different degrees of color distribution based on the twist level.
Air-entangled yarn: These yarns contain 3 or more fiber ends and are combined using air jets. Often referred to as “heathered”, these yarns are used in loop pile carpets. Air-entangling processes exist to create yarns with highly blended aesthetics and near-solid colorations as well as more twisted looks that offer color separation.
